 Carefree Day In Occoquan
May 23, 2010

The Carefree Boat Club of Occoquan, VA will be sponsoring its 2nd annual Carefree Day on Sunday May 23rd, 2010. This one-day event will include presentations that focus on safe boating through education and is open to the public.

All sessions will take place at Madigan's Waterfront Restaurant on the upper level beginning at 11am and running until 2pm. Presenters will include local club members, the U.S. Coast Guard, even an 11-year-old Cadette!

11:00 AM: Women & Boating, presented by Carolyn Wixson

This presentation demonstrates the steady increase in the number of women boaters, owners and captains over the last 50 years. Once considered a male-dominated activity, more women than ever are becoming involved in boating and using it as a source of entertainment, competition and relaxation.

12:00 PM: Kids on the River - Having Fun Safely, presented by Emmalee Haga

Emmalee is an 11-year-old Cadette who achieved her Bronze Award last year by presenting this seminar on safety for kids on the river. She will demonstrate the proper use of a personal flotation device, or PFD, and she will also discuss the key components of a boat, and she will also give a brief demonstration of weight and balance on a boat and the importance of proper weight distribution to ensure maximum safety.

1:00 PM: Suddenly in Command, presented by Captain Lisa Alexander

This presentation is designed for those who are generally not at the helm, but may find themselves suddenly in command should the captain become incapacitated. This boating safety primer will help you step into this role by preparing you with the basics of what you need to know in the event of an emergency when it becomes necessary to take command of a vessel.

2:00 PM: Waterways Watch, presented by a member of the U.S. Coast Guard

This final presentation is a part of the Homeland Defense Program, and is given to help alert boaters to the many ways they can support our homeland defense and the U.S. Coast Guard in protecting our shores military bases and bridges and other infrastructure by raising awareness and helping boaters develop a heightened sensitivity toward unusual events or individuals that may be encountered in or around ports, docks, marinas, riversides, beaches, or waterfront communities.

Throughout the day, Captain Mark Perry will be conducting Occoquan River Tours on the Miss Rivershore, beginning at 9:30am and running every 90 minutes until 6:00pm. Admission is $10 per person and includes a tour that lasts approximately 60 minutes, pointing out various areas of interest along the beautiful Occoquan River. Concessions will be available on board.

Carefree Boat Club is a private, members only boat club with more than 8 clubs located in the Chesapeake Bay estuary. Membership includes use of boats at any of these clubs. Leo Smith, the Membership Director of the Carefree Boat Club of Occoquan, is available to assist you with any questions you may have about the Carefree Boat Club and all the benefits a membership in the Carefree Boat Club has to offer.

So be sure to mark your calendar and don't miss this great event!
